This newsletter covers no new releases, but instead looks back to 2008, including the Top 20 sellers at Music Non Stop since we re-launched the website in late August and a few personal favourites, and then covers items we have on sale during January. It's very difficult to pick out one release over others when there has been so much quality over the last 4-5 months, but we at MNS would like to make a special mention for a newcomer - Parralox. This is electropop at its finest and has been played to death here. Please give it a listen if you haven't already done so.
Fixmer/McCarthy's 'Into The Night' has also been in my CD player a lot recently too. It's more cultured and less banging than previous releases, but still has great club tracks and, along with the Parralox, is a personal favourite.
Here's to some great releases in 2009, including the new Combichrist album, which has already out-sold everything in 2008's Top 20 on pre-order, apart from FH3.

Review 'The Slip' is the eighth proper studio release for NIN. The music here resembles types of songs from 'With Teeth', 'Year Zero' and 'Ghosts'. Reznor is generally known for taking big steps forward. Although he is alienating some older fans and gaining new ones, he is always ensuring NIN's longevity. 'The Slip' is a very good record more on the lines of 'With Teeth'. A step back and not forward. But even Reznor needs a break from being epic every once in a while! These songs may sound more like outtakes from the last three albums, but the songs are good, especially the ballad and instrumentals. 'Demon Speed' is a completely new type of song for Reznor. Originally released as a download on the bands website, this CD version is a very welcome addition to the collection of any self-respecting NIN fan. "Silent Shout" eschews the quirky, often irregular and varied quality of their previous album, ironing out the bumps to deliver a much more streamlined, tighter, graceful and altogether more focused album. From undulating opener - all arpeggiated sequencer lines and whispered distorted vocals you are snared in The Knife's sublime ability to marry simple, burrowing melodies with melancholy machine code rhythms and instantly recognisable ( as them ) vocal effects : one triumph that they have surely succeeded in ( and it is a problem that all vocal fronted electronic bands have struggled with over the years ) is placing themselves as instantly recognisable due to their inventive and original use of vocal effects - from slowed down pitch-filtered textured vocoders, to helium octaves cartoonist speech they perfectly navigate the vocal / textural divide as inventively as and refreshingly as any band in recent memory.
