Welcome to the weekly round-up of forthcoming releases. This is another bumper issue of quality releases after a few weeks away on holiday.
First up is band that was never included on the website by the previous owners, but is a BIG favourite of ours - NEW MODEL ARMY. Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980, they are set to release their eleventh studio album entitled "Today Is a Good Day'. Mostly written last autumn in the wake of the Wall Street Collapse (an event celebrated in the white-hot opening title track), the recording was postponed by the sudden and unexpected death of the band's long-time friend and manager. The album is now finished and is filled with unclassifiable music and challenging lyrical ideas.
Some big releases from the newly-rejuvenated DEPENDENT label next, with their flagship compilation series "Septic" back for its 8th Volume. As always, the latest "Septic" instalment offers the perfect mixture of promising newcomers on the electro/EBM scene, plus previously unreleased tracks from popular more-established artists, including MESH, VELVET ACID CHRIST, EDGE OF DAWN and INFORMATIK.
Also on DEPENDENT we have CLAIRE VOYANT's new album "Lustre", INFORMATIK's "Arena", consisting of 12 outstanding emotional compositions, and one of the biggest hopes for a 'NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR 2009' award, KILOWATTS & VANEK, who blow to pieces any prejudice about the futility of merging electronic and acoustic music.
The new ASP release "Wer Sonst? / Im Märchenland" is a 'double A side' single with two incredibly strong title tracks and a multitude of fantastic bonus material - eight audio tracks, a live video and a twelve-page booklet packaged in a six-panelled digipak which features two alternative covers. Also available as a limited edition with 42 page hardcover comic book!!
Also from TRISOL is new band EXT!ZE, with its mixture of industrial, trance, hellektro, electro and techno. With their song "Hellektrostar" they are already going down a storm in the French and German clubs. This EP is a taster for the coming album, and features the track "100% Pure Cocaine" alongside the club smash "Hellektrostar", as well as remixes from well known cohorts such as REAPER and NACHTMAHR. Strictly limited to 999 copies.
A long time ago, INDIVIDUAL TOTEM emerged as one of Germany's most innovative industrial bands. But even their most hardcore fans are not aware of the first real release: a cassette-only album called "Mumia Vera", from 1992. Now hopelessly out of print and all but forgotten, "Mumia Vera" represents the early stages of INDIVIDUAL TOTEM. Completely remastered and re-tweaked from the original cassettes, and incorporating the original artwork, this limited edition double CD includes the entire "Flow EP" and previously unreleased live material.
The new album, the first in 5 years, from BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL is "10 Neurotics". Featuring drum kit and bass for the first time in 20 years, these fourteen songs are revealing first-person narratives. These are stories so unnerving and personal that "10 Neurotics" features an all-new line-up; the previous vocalists quit the group out of discomfort with the content!
The "Re:lectro" EP from AUTODAFEH is Electronic Music for Body and Mind. This EP offers some catchy and very danceable tracks that continue to show the unique talent the band has for taking from the old and turning it into something new.
MARC ALMOND, as the a latter day curator of popular song, has rediscovered the songbook of VADIM KOZIN; the Soviet era's much-loved, exiled and then forgotten singer of Gypsy Folk and Russian Torch Song Romances. The songs have been specially translated for Marc and have never been sung in English before. "Orpheus in Exile" was recorded and mixed in Moscow, and features Russia's most famous folk ensemble, Orchestra Rossiya.
Finally, we now have the full review and tracklisting for the new ASSEMBLAGE 23 "Compass" releases.

There's a lot in the pipeline at the moment with SITD's "Laughingstock" MCD, PAINBASTARD's 2006 album "No Need to Worry", CHRISTIAN DEATH's 1982 debut "Only Theatre of Pain", ALIEN SEX FIEND's second album "Acid Bath", DURAN DURAN's "Arena (An Absurd Notion) + The Making of Arena" and "Sing Blue Silver - 1984 Tour Documentary" DVDs, and THE FROZEN AUTUMN's "Pale Awakening", an excellent collection of marvellous songs with strong 80s influences.

Review NEW MODEL ARMY are a legendary global underground cult band. Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980, their beginnings were inspired by Punk Rock, Northern Soul and the incendiary atmosphere of the times. Review Time is the sensation of mortality; the steady transition from past to future, certainty to uncertainty. And while the certainty of mortality has preoccupied humanity since the earliest times, there also exists an ancient desire to know the future. Science considers only objective reality, where events are taken as evidence of physical laws whose truth may be ascertained by experiment. Clairvoyants, on the other hand, have always tried to go one step further, but have never claimed control over the laws of gravity or methods of communication. CLAIRE VOYANT are a four-piece band from Sacramento. The name, a play on the French 'clairvoyant' (one who possesses 'second sight'), was also the name of a sensational 1940s comic strip series. The fictional Claire Voyant was the alias of an antiheroine called “The Black Widow”, whilst CLAIRE VOYANT the band conceals singer Victoria Lloyd. With their new album "Lustre", CLAIRE VOYANT lead the listener on a trip through a dreamlike musical world. Victoria's dulcet voice, heavily treated with echo and chorus, winds its way through forests of keyboard and guitar. Despite filling the acoustic space to its limit, the effect is warm and clear but never excessive. Review Da5id Din and Tyler Newman are musicians from two successful but very different musical projects: DIN_FIV and BATTERY CAGE. While Tyler prefers the gut feeling approach, Da5id takes the rational road instead. Although both use vocals and instrumentation in equal parts, this is their only common ground. When making music Tyler purely follows his emotional instincts, creates atmosphere and mood to embody the feeling rather than the concept. On the other side, Da5id provides the structure because for him the rationale is above all else. "I like exploring different directions even if the target is always the same: to discover yourself." The result is a unique sound that is much more than just the simple sum of these different musical philosophies, combining modern recording technology with elements of traditional pop music. Over the last six albums, their music has developed in parallel to the band's personality, moving over the course of a decade from a harsh EBM sound to a more mature and introverted style with deep vocoder vocals, dark melodies, empathetic lyrics, melodic synthesizer string sounds and brilliant production quality. Review One of the biggest hopes for a 'NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR 2009' award!!! KILOWATTS & VANEK blow to pieces any prejudice about the futility of merging electronic and acoustic music. The American/Belgian duo took four years to save their album "Focus and Flow" to hard disc, and then put it online for sale on their website. An enthusiastic fan asked them to perform two shows in Germany, and that was the first time Watts and Vanek met in person, despite having collaborated for several years. A few months later, Dependent owner Stefan Herwig stumbled across a link in the 'Hybridized' Music forum recommending an amazing album... The link leads to "Focus And Flow". The Dependent label had been closed down a good year before, but Herwig could not withdraw from the fascinating and unique sound of the record, and started to look for a record label for KILOWATTS & VANEK. Interest came from Motor Digital, the net label department of Motor founder Tim Renner. However, nobody seemed interested in releasing "Focus and flow" physically. This lead Stefan to reactivate his record label, and gave KILOWATTS & VANEK a unique advantage: they are home on two separate record labels. So far a truly unique structure. But the theme of unique synergy does not only spread throughout the bands work structure, it is equally apparent in their music: you won't find better vocals or more bittersweet melancholy in any other electronic music. You have not yet heard these kind grooves and wicked effects in guitar ballads. Review AUTODAFEH - the "Re:lectro" EP is Electronic Music for Body and Mind... AUTODAFEH, based in Sweden, are definitely on the fast-track to the top of their genre. Their debut album, "Hunt for Glory" quickly made its way to the top of the German Alternative Charts and found a home on many dance floors and radio playlists across the globe. Soon after, the band was requested by FRONT 242 to be the opening act for their tour stops in Sweden. Following on from this success, AUTODAFEH have now put together this very special EP release, a tribute to the "old-school" style of Electro/New Wave and early Electronic Body Music. This EP offers some catchy and very danceable tracks that continue to show the unique talent the band has for taking from the old and turning it into something new. Review MARC ALMOND, as the a latter day curator of popular song, has rediscovered the songbook of VADIM KOZIN. Kozin was the Soviet era's much-loved, exiled and then forgotten singer of Gypsy Folk and Russian Torch Song Romances. Almond discovered Kozin's work on his first visit to Russia in 1992 and was immediately taken with the purity and passion of his voice, as well as the beauty and melancholy of his songs, which are enhanced by the hardships Kozin suffered throughout his life. Marc has joined creative forces with Russian producer and musical arranger Alexei Fedorov who shares both Marc's love of Kozin and his aim to help bring his repertoire to a new audience. The songs have been specially translated for Marc and have never been sung in English before. "Oprheus in Exile" was recorded and mixed in Moscow, and features Russia's most famous folk ensemble, Orchestra Rossiya, conducted by renowned arranger/conductor, Anatoly Sobolev, who also arranged some of Kozin's songs for the orchestra. The flamboyance and despair of Kozin is juxtaposed by the ever-present optimism of a lost genre of song. Marc gives these universal concerns an overdue airing on a unique album that gives the original songs an all-new big, classy and stylized orchestral production, yet stays true to the original feel and roots of the songs. Review This album marks the welcome return of one of the most amazing industrial acts: the conception of the Czech ensemble SKROL arose from the visions of its spiritual father Vladimír Hirsch (composer, keyboards, drums, programming, vocal) in the autumn of 1995, when he was joined by Martina Sanollová-Sweeney (vocals) and Tom Saivon (lyrics, noise structures). The project employs original principles of composition, with added influences from classical music. Their inspiration derives mainly from Slavic melodies and harmonies. "New Laws New Orders" was originally an instrumental suite by Vladimir Hirsch, created in 2000. Later some of the tracks were completely re-worked by the ensemble and the result is a majestic and uncompromisingly beautiful album of great melodies, contemporary neo-classical orchestrations accompanied by industrial ambient- and noisescapes, generated by the latest technology. The album is a sort of 'swan song' for the band, who will be definitely discontinuing their activities after this release. Review The German ritual-folk formation :GOLGATHA: was founded in 2004 by Christoph Donarski. The first full length album "The Waste Land" was originally released after two compilation tracks appeared in an edition of 100 hand-numbered CD-Rs. On "The Waste Land" sinister and pessimistic soundscapes unfold and spread fragmented allusions and remarks on spiritual death and cultural clash. The symbolic name of :GOLGATHA: - which is the execution hill in Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified - was never more fitting than in this early apocalyptic soundtrack for an Inner Cinema, carried by ritual drums, dark drones, mysterious sounds and sacred voices. For this re-release the original sound has been totally re-mastered and appears more powerful than ever before. The original artwork is complemented by bleak photos from the same era to complete the image. Review And thus was American goth rock born. Perhaps an extreme statement, as one could argue .45 GRAVE beat CHRISTIAN DEATH to the punch, if with a lot more intentional humour. Still, it's about the only thing that can be said upon listening to CHRISTIAN DEATH's debut, "Only Theatre of Pain", released in 1982 and influencing countless bands since then. The member who got the most attention was, unsurprisingly, singer Rozz Williams, but guitarist Rikk Agnew was the secret weapon that makes this album so good. With the first phase of THE ADOLESCENTS (and a solo album) behind him, he brings his punk-inspired influences here, and with the help of longtime producer Thom Wilson, the two created a perfectly ominous world of tolling bells, heavily treated guitar, and general spookiness. Bassist James McGearty and drummer George Belanger keep the murky energy going and thankfully aren't afraid to kick up a storm when needed either. The most memorable song is "Romeo's Distress", a catchy slice of doomy punk-pop that admittedly it has one of the most un-PC lyrical starts around. Throughout, the band either kick out the melancholy jams with McGearty's purring bass leading the way, or indulge in sheer atmospherics, some quite effective. Witness the slow wash of sound concluding what was the first side of the vinyl release and kicking off the second, or the combination of noise, keyboards, and treated vocals on the closing track "Prayer". And then there's Williams — those who accused BAUHAUS singer Peter Murphy of delivering up pretentious lyrics and overwrought performances must have flipped upon hearing this record. Sodomized boys in front of furnace altars, hilariously naïve reversed words meant to be spooky ("Reficul!"), incense-laden sex, "roses and candles, silver knives and spoons", song titles like "Mysterium Iniquitatis" and "Spiritual Cramp", all delivered with a breathless moan at once low and whiny. His weird charm comes through after a while, but it usually takes a couple of listens to get the giggles out. The CD version contains also contains the Deathwish EP as a welcome bonus. Review Doctor Duran (actor Milo O’Shea), the evil character in the cult film "Barbarella" returns to earth, crash-landing his time machine directly underneath the giant stadium in Oakland, California. He is bent upon doing battle with the five imposters above him (the band) who have stolen his name. The evil doctor sends out his henchmen to destroy them as they perform to a packed stadium. DURAN DURAN continue to perform throughout, as chaos ensues around them. DURAN DURAN are captured at their musical best in "Arena" by award winning director, Russell Mulcahy, who honed his skills working on music promos throughout the 80s, directing Duran videos "Planet Earth", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Rio", "Save a Prayer", "The Reflex" and "Wild Boys" amongst others. He then moved into full length feature films and had success with "Highlander" I and II and "Tale of the Mummy". He has recently moved into TV, directing the US version of the UK TV series "Queer as Folk". Review In 1984, DURAN DURAN toured Canada and America. It was their first major tour as headliners in these two countries. Over 79 days they travelled approximately 18,000 miles and played 51 shows in 43 cities to over 550,000 fans. The entire tour was filmed for this 'behind the scenes' documentary which offers some fascinating and intriguing glimpses into the fun, glamour, agony, ecstasy and ultimate glory of three months on the road. The band is shown thriving on the pressures, psyching themselves up pre-stage and then delivering their all to a thunderous response. The production manager, tour manager and road crew are frequently caught on camera, fraught with last minute panics and touring nerves. Review BLACK HEAVEN, side project of MANTUS, present for the first time their extensive history on double CD. This collection should not be regarded as a 'best of' in the accepted sense, but a retrospective which makes clear that BLACK HEAVEN have until now been unfairly underestimated. BLACK HEAVEN are the other side of the coin. This project is not the opposite of MANTUS, but neither is it a sphere in which the musicians 'just want to mess about', as is so often the case with side projects. With the lyrical depth of their material, BLACK HEAVEN are certainly beyond all cliches; from pure dark poetry to the contrasting voices of Martin Schindler and Thalia. In contrast to the main project of the two protagonists, BLACK HEAVEN are more electronically-orientated and dispense with the rock guitars and bombastic classical arrangements without losing themselves in EBM stamping or standard future-pop pap. Instead, what we have here is a convincing attempt to drag intelligent, poetic lyrics out of the self-absorption of the lonely bedroom and onto the dancefloors of the clubs - the perfect mixture of rhythm, delicate sequences, danceable sounds and the lyricism which we already know from MANTUS. Review CAMOUFLAGE are one of the few German bands to have been making music successfully at home and abroad for the last couple of decades. "The Great Commandment" (1987) and "Love Is a Shield" (1989) were actually worldwide hits. After four albums, CAMOUFLAGE felt it was time to experiment. This phase reached its zenith with the album "Spice Crackers" in 1995 – the most daring, most interesting work they ever released. Electropop tracks sit side by side with hypnotic, repetitive, spherical pieces which give a taste of what follows on the bonus disc. The bonus CD contains 14 tracks, eleven of which have never before seen the light of day. Unlike any of their other productions, "Spice Crackers" drew heavily on extravagant live sessions and bold experimentation. Countless tapes and DATs mounted up, of which only a fraction made it onto the final album. Yet amongst the "rejects" were genuine pearls of 90s electronic music (dub techno, downbeat, electronica, intelligent dance music, ambient), evoking memories of the golden age of German electronic creativity, the 1970s. Review In 2003, Pete Brough, founding member of German band TWELVE DRUMMERS DRUMMING, and Ralf Aussem, guitarist from the original 12DD cast and mastermind behind the hugely successful band SUN, joined forces with vocalist Carlo van Putten (THE CONVENT) and collectively gave life to DEAD GUITARS. In 2007 they were joined by Patrick Schmitz on drums and Sven-Olaf Dirks on bass guitar, a down-to-earth rhythm section providing a solid foundation within the DEAD GUITARS family. After the success of their 2007 debut "Airplanes" and their extensive European tour with THE MISSION in 2008 the band returned to the studio to record the new album. This time three members of THE MISSION collaborated and performed on the new album, Wayne Hussey ("Isolation"), Mark G. Thwaite ("Pristine") and Richie Vernon ("Blue"). The result is an album with 12 unique tracks representing the whole DEAD GUITARS universe including mid- and up-tempo tracks like "Miss America" and "Pristine", strong epic/psychedelic songs like "Silver Cross River" and moody pieces like "Lazy Moon" and "Raise Your Flags". The songs are covered by strong lyrics based on powerful and melancholic song-writing. Review LITTLE DRAGON return with a spectacular second album offering, a pulsating electro pop epic that PRINCE would be proud of (only fronted by a beautiful Swedish lady with a sultry voice). A bold and surprising step forward from their self-titled debut, released two years ago to great acclaim especially in specialist circles. With disparate influences from DEPECHE MODE to PRINCE, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM to JAMES HOLDEN, Dancehall to R&B, Jazz and Soul, LITTLE DRAGON take their place among artists who straddle many genres, yet somehow create their own and in doing so create "sounds that make time stop" (Yukimi). Review With each new creation there is that magical moment when the first pen-stroke is pulled across the parchment, the first drops moisten the mortar and the clocks are turned back. Each cycle of the moon also begins with darkness: the new moon (in German, 'der Neumond'). With their new work, the musicians from WOLFENMOND conclude all of the phases of the moon that we have experienced with them over the last ten years. The mixture of electronic sounds and historical instruments represents a new beginning with which they inaugurate a new cycle. The listener will be transfixed by the five titles appearing here: the title track "Neumond" comes across with the usual expressive lyrics and sounds of the shawm (a predecessor of the oboe), but also makes extensive use of electronic instrumentation, and spectacularly demonstrates the new path which WOLFENMOND propose to follow. But WOLFENMOND are not following these paths alone. Artists such as Ingo Hampf from SUBWAY TO SALLY, Nicholas Albanis from DANDELION WINE and Matthias Ambré from ASP, in addition to other high-calibre artists have picked up their idea and have combined WOLFENMOND pieces with electronic sounds. Review In 2005 Massimo Magrini was invited to provide the soundtrack for the M3M art exhibition in Pisa, Italy. The exhibition was based around images of the seaside and the river estuaries of the Pisana area, which has a CMASA aeroplane factory built at its centre, face to face with archaic marine cottages. This marvelous seaside scenery mixed with vintage industrial locations, together with a little nostalgia, has led to the creation of an unexpected but amazing mood. To sculpture a soundtrack for this scenery, Magrini was asked to use acoustic and natural sounds too and so, for this work, he added treated piano and snippets of acoustic guitars, together with water sounds and metal samples. This may sound unusual for a BAD SECTOR release but all these new elements are perfectly blended into the massive and ambient soundwaves that previous releases are known for, making "Cmasa" probably Magrini's most emotional album to date. Review Fantastic pagan/folk metallers KORPIKLAANI are back with a brand new album. Their music consists of metal with a strong folky base. So does their choice of instruments: they use a mixture of electric guitars and drums as well as violin, woodwinds, jouhikko, djembé, and the typical Finnish folk instrument - the accordion. They reject synthesizers (of course), and use only genuine "real" instruments. To most people their music is so cheerful and lively that they cannot resist dancing, laughing and feeling happy. Maybe that is why fans call it 'beer-metal' (it certainly has the same effect as beer), but the name could be also due to the many songs about this all-time favorite drink of KORPIKLAANI. The earliest KORPIKLAANI albums contained only English lyrics, but nowadays most lyrics are in Finnish. These lyrics are often written in the Kalevala-style (a special metre, from the Finnish national epic) and tell about nature, history, partying - and beer of course! At first KORPIKLAANI was just another unknown Finnish band. Nowadays they are widely appreciated for their unique and cheerful music. These KORPIKLAANI guys play because they really like to, they write songs because they cannot resist it, and they enter the studio because it would be waste not to do anything with the endless stream of songs. Review After three years of silence following the release of their successful album "We Collide", MESH return with "Only Better", the pre-release single to the forthcoming LP "A Perfect Solution" to be released in October. Those who are familiar with this British act will know that neither title is meant to be taken as optimistically as they may first appear, and those who let the music take effect quickly realize that it is precisely the opposite, for MESH have become harder, dirtier, and darker on "Only Better" than we have become accustomed to. The former synth-pop heroes are not afraid to break from convention and make use of guitars either, which will likely raise some eyebrows, particularly on the exclusive B-side "Shattered Glass". Both songs are perfect previews to the style of the new album, both in music and lyrical content.
