Welcome to our weekly round-up of forthcoming releases, and what a week it is!

COMBICHRIST have announced a brand new menacing club smash in form of "Scarred", the third single from the highly successful album "Today We Are All Demons". The hellish new maxi CD features three new mixes and the album version of the title track.

When it became apparent that the last remaining CD copies of the FADERHEAD albums FH1, FH2 and FH3 would soon be sold, the decision was made to create a 'best of' compilation of the most popular songs from these three records. "Trilogy" features 18-tracks and is a MUST-BUY for anyone who doesn't yet own any FADERHEAD CDs, or who has an incomplete collection! Note - we have a very small number of "FH1" and "Horizon Born" remaining!

Genre-smashing musical pioneers GOLDFRAPP return with their brand new album "Head First". The duo's fifth album is the most powerful trip to date, a speedy rush of synth optimism, euphoria, fantasy and romance. With life-affirming lyrics and stellar production it lifts off at full tilt and takes us on a journey to the heart of 2010. The vinyl edition also includes a copy of the CD release.

On "Mental [Per]mutation", KIEW dive deeper into the everyday life of the institution, unearthing a sonic rollercoaster ride of thudding mutated dancefloor industrial hybrids, acoustic experiments, and instrumentals with a soundtrack-like feel. "Mental [Per]mutation" includes a second disc on which special cases from outside the institution have gained access to KIEW's sound files to inject them with their very own madness. Welcome to Disco Dementia!

As a special bonus, the set includes a maxi CD from the promising new German industrial project MAELSTROM INC.

When it comes to classic EBM tunes, no list would be complete without the German club hit "Das Mass der Dinge" by U-TEK, a side project of none other than Sevren Ni-Arb of X MARKS THE PEDWALK fame. INFACTED RECORDINGS present part 9 of the all time classics collection of EBM hits on another fourteen-track full length CD, fully digitally remastered. Limited to 1000 copies so be fast!

A few releases from well-known UK acts now. Firstly, "
The Face - The Very Best of Visage" celebrates it being 30 years since VISAGE released the seminal "Fade to Grey"; the vinyl re-issue of the classic "Darklands" by THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN is out soon; and JOHN FOXX's new limited edition "Burning Car/20th Century" vinyl release is also imminent.

There are two new gothic metal releases from the OUT OF LINE label group. LORD OF THE LOST bring us "Fears", whilst REFLEXION offer up "Edge". And more from the label with the very welcome re-issue of "Held V Shadow Mission" by KIRLIAN CAMERA, which sold out very quickly last January.

"With Friends Like These" is a double CD compilation, featuring 40 tracks from 'oldies' like ORCHESTRA NOIR, SIEBEN, NAEVUS, TOR LUNDVALL, TONY WAKEFORD, ANDREW KING and ARCANA as well as a roster of 'younger' but no less talented artists.

Goldfrapp Head First £13.75
Review
Genre-smashing musical pioneers GOLDFRAPP return with their brand new album "Head First". The duo's fifth album is GOLDFRAPP's most powerful trip to date, a speedy rush of synth optimism, euphoria, fantasy and romance. With life-affirming lyrics and stellar production it lifts off at full tilt and takes us on a journey to the heart of 2010.

The diversity, ambition and direction of the new album highlights GOLDFRAPP as true agenda-setters and modern British musical icons. "Head First" follows the critically acclaimed "Seventh Tree", which saw the NME describe GOLDFRAPP as "having done the seemingly impossible and become even more fantasy fabulous" and as "sublime, anthemic pop" by The Independent. It is the latest in a brilliantly consistent body of work - from the captivating electronic balladry of Mercury nominated debut "Felt Mountain" and its distorted dancefloor follow-up, "Black Cherry", to the glitterball glamour of "Supernature" which came out in summer 2005 and went on to sell over a million copies worldwide.

GOLDFRAPP will take "Head First" on tour later in 2010 - following the massive acclaim for both the "Supernature" and "Seventh Tree" tours and festival appearances around the world, GOLDFRAPP have underlined their reputation as one of the most transcendent and inventive live bands around.

Kiew Mental [Per]mutation £16.75
Review
Welcome to a new audio therapy in the electro madhouse! On "Mental [Per]mutation", our favourite patients dive deeper into the everyday life of the institution, unearthing a sonic rollercoaster ride of thudding mutated dancefloor industrial hybrids ("Käferfrühstück", "Mister 29" and many more), acoustic experiments, and instrumentals with a soundtrack-like feel (the "Retrograd" series.) During the course of the album, the listener will gain deep insights into psychoacoustic excerpts from the patients' files, strange new forms of therapy and numerous soliloquies, often between multiple personalities.

"Mental [Per]mutation" includes a second disc on which special cases from outside the institution (among them the NYC techno legend LENNY DEE) have gained access to KiEw's sound files to inject them with their very own madness. Welcome to Disco Dementia! Only one question remains: are the musicians mad or is it the listener?

Visage The Face - The Very Best of Visage £13.75
Review
Who could have imagined that a few kids in the 70s, fed up with punk, would open a nightclub - The Blitz, in Covent Garden - that would pioneer a style of music that would become one of the most resilient and successful genres of the next few decades? As we reach the end of the '00s heading into the '10s, Electropop is still one of the most successful styles around. MGMT, LA ROUX, LADY GAGA, LITTLE BOOTS, LADYHAWKE, these artists now top the year end polls just as VISAGE, SOFT CELL, HUMAN LEAGUE and DEPECHE MODE did before them.

It's now 30 years since VISAGE released the seminal "Fade to Grey". It was a huge dancefloor hit, topping the charts in the UK and Europe. It's a track that defines the 80s, that instantly transports you back to the time of the Blitz Kids, those New Romantic vanguards whose painted faces and rococo attire littered the pages of Vogue and The Face. To celebrate this anniversary comes the release of this 'Greatest Hits' package featuring 2009 remixes of "Fade to Grey" by Lee Mortimer and Michael Gray of THE WEEKEND and BORDERLINE fame, alongside VISAGE's complete chart-topping hit singles as well as some of the classic and highly sought after dance remixes.

The Jesus and Mary Chain Darklands £19.75
Review
The second album from the brothers Reid, originally released in 1987, "Darklands" is more accessible and hooky than "Psychocandy", leaving most of the feedback and some of the noise behind to focus on the songs, making a clear break from the legendary debut album. With tracks such as "April Skies", "Darklands", "Happy When It Rains" and "Nine Million Rainy Days" the Reids proved they had plenty of great songs in them and wouldn't be boxed in by the past. An all out classic, now re-issued on 180g vinyl.

Lord of the Lost Fears £14.00
Review
Sometimes it needs an earthquake to blow the dust from a genre that is way past its prime. The term 'Gothic Metal' has become more and more of a farce in the past couple of years, drowning in a sea of plastic pomp, embarrassing aggro-poses and soft rock drivel. Enter LORD OF THE LOST, the band fronted by 'Mr. 1000 Voices' Chris Harms, which ignores the genre's clichés and impresses with an energetic mix of hit compatible melodies, dark atmosphere and impulsive aggression. Chris Harms is an extremely versatile vocalist and might tingle your spine with his deep timbre one moment, only to raise sonic hell with hefty growls and piercing screams the next. LORD OF THE LOST create their very own niche bridging the gap between headbanging inferno, glam rock charm and dark romance with enthralling, catchy songs that are infused with an irresistible energy. As the missing link between gothic and MARILYN MANSON, the Hamburg-based band are unleashing an avalanche that will be hard to stop! Praise the LORD OF THE LOST!

Reflexion Edge £14.00
Review
With album number three, Finnish dark alternative metal band REFLEXION have delivered quite a smasher! Thudding tribal drums and massive, deep guitar riffs infuse the band's dark melodic hit tunes with a refreshing kick that pleasantly distinguishes itself from the over produced kitsch that most of their fellow countrymen are sporting. This time around REFLEXION are playing it rough, spiffing up even their slow songs with Sabbath-esque doom riffs and toying with complex song structures that often border on prog metal, but without ever losing track of the catchy, often gloomy melodies that made their first two albums nearly impossible to resist. "Edge" revels in dark atmosphere and hit qualities but will probably cause some serious head banging attacks with metal veterans as well, due to a much harder approach.

Kirlian Camera Held V Shadow Mission [Re-Issue] £12.75
Review
Originally released in January of 2009, and sold out within 2 weeks, this eleven-track full length release was on the market for much too short a time and the number of requests for a re-release have been huge. So here it is once again, in regular jewel box this time, the album that marked the first release of the Italian cult group on Out of Line.

The centrepiece of this album is a modern and seriously club-compatible reinvention of the group's classic hit "Heldenplatz", combined with an array of ALL NEW songs that can easily stand in line with some of KIRLIAN CAMERA's biggest classics. On tracks like "E.D.O.", the band mingle memorable melodies with powerful electronics and an irrepressible lust for sonic experimentation, all carried by the impressive vocal presence of Elena Alice Fossi. Elena and Angelo Bergamini have created a dense net of electronic sounds that pull you into their unique atmosphere but that will work on a dancefloor just as well, while still retaining the spirit and feeling of the classic KIRLIAN CAMERA hits. Also features a cover of PINK FLOYD's "Julia Dream", the new version of KIRLIAN CAMERA's classic single "Edges" (originally from 1984) and the FOTONOVELA Remix of "K-Pax".

Tor Lundvall Ghost Years £15.75
Review
"Ghost Years" is TOR LUNDVALL's first retrospective CD featuring tracks from various compilations and vinyl-only releases, plus some unreleased material. The focus is mostly on his vocal work, however there are a few instrumental pieces included as well. Although the music spans about a decade, you will be surprised at how well the tracks flow together to make a coherent ensemble, evolving from Lundvall's earlier song-oriented compositions to the more ambient nature of his recent recordings.

Dope Stars Inc. 21st Century Slave [Japanese Limited Edition] £16.50
Review
DOPE STARS INC.'s first 2 albums "Neuromance" and "Gigahearts" achieved massive sales and media attention across Europe and the US, gaining chart positions in many countries. But their third album "21st Century Slave" is their strongest ever.

In the midst of the current global economic collapse, blamed by most on the excesses of corporate greed, the timing could not be more appropriate for the socio-political message of "21st Century Slave". Welcome to DOPE STARS INC.'s dystopian vision of the world of today, where we are either tools of technology and giant uncaring corporations, or where we embrace the system to fight it from within. With "21st Century Slave", DOPE STARS INC. take up the cyberpunk themes of cult authors like William Gibson and give them musical form. An awe-inspiring collision of programmed electronics, heavy rock guitars and punk aggression, all perfectly produced by charismatic frontman Victor Love. From the throbbing industrial dance beats of the ominous opening call to arms "Omega Drones", to the unexpectedly sweet acoustic pop melodies of the final song "Its For You", the album twists and turns but never disappoints. Both diverse and decisive in its musical choices, "21st Century Slave" embraces industrial, nu-metal and electro influences, but always finds a convergence that is uniquely DOPE STARS INC.

This special Japanese edition, released through Death Watch Asia, features three extra tracks in addition the eleven tracks of the standard European edition: remixes from Tokyo industrial rock act BAAL, Osaka-based SINS OF THE FLESH and South American superstars VIGILANTE. It comes in a six-panel digipak with sixteen-page colour booklet, four-panel inser with Japanese liner notes and obi. IN beautifully-designed artwork, Victor Love' musical and lyrical vision is perfectly illustrated by digital artist Rhett Podersoo, whose depiction of our modern urban environment resonates with the visual aesthetic of Ridley Scott's "Bladerunner". Dirty cityscapes and harsh neon oppress us as attack helicopters patrol the polluted skies... and DOPE STARS INC. and their star emblem oversee all from rooftops and TV screens.

Bak XIII Best of Bak XIII [Japanese Limited Edition] £16.50
Review
BAK XIII are the dark electro/new wave powerhouse from Switzerland, combining modern industrial production with classic old-school EBM sequencing: 21st Century music with punk attitude and a retro feel evidenced by song-titles like "80s Are Back Forever" and "New Wave Party". In Europe, BAK XIII have toured with such top names on the electro-industrial scene as SUICIDE COMMANDO, FRONT 242 and DAS ICH, and have remixed or been remixed by top artists like PSYCHE, HIV+ and THE NEON JUDGEMENT.

In 2008, Death Watch Asia invited BAK XIII programmer Baron Von Smock to Japan to present his ambient-industrial solo project MUSIC FOR THE SPACE live in Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, and as guest DJ for leading dark scene event 'Tokyo Dark Castle' in Shinjuku. Now they are proud to present a world exclusive 'Greatest Hits Collection' of BAK XIII celebrating the prolific musical career of Switzerland's best-known electro-industrial act!

Originally formed in Geneva in 2001 as a duo by Baron Von Smock and DDDmix (vocals, programming), since 2003 BAK XIII have operated as a trio with guitarists Garf (2003-2006) and Tenebras (2007-2009) adding metal riffs to the mix. During this period they have also released a new studio album almost every year: "In Cauda Venenum" (2003), "Post Lucem Tenebrae" (2004), "Morituri Te Salutant" (2005), "Vae Victis" (2006) and "Ultima Ratio Regum" (2008), plus the 2006 EP "Dead Again". "Best Of BAK XIII" contains a massive 20 tracks from all five BAK XIII albums, all personally selected by the band themselves!

Under exclusive license from BAK XIII's European label Urgence Disk Records, DWA's "Best Of BAK XIII" comes with an eight-panel folding insert detailing the entire recorded history of BAK XIII, plus a four-panel insert with Japanese liner notes about the band. Limited to 200 copies, this unique album is presented in a six-panel digipak, with artwork specially commissioned for this release!

Inertia Interpret [Japanese Limited Edition] £19.75
Review
Formed in the UK by KILLING JOKE keyboard player Reza Udhin, INERTIA released their first MCD "Infiltrator" on the German label Celtic Circle in 1995 to widespread critical acclaim. As a result of the popularity of "Infiltrator", between 1995-1996 INERTIA were invited to play across Europe - including an appearance at Wave Gotik Treffen 1996. The success in America of their second MCD "Mind Energy" and their debut album "Programmed to Respond" (1997) led to INERTIA's first full-length US tour, supporting DAS ICH. Since 1997, INERTIA have returned to Wave Gotik Treffen (1999), have played several lengthy headline tours of the US (with support from acts such as TERRORFAKT and PROJECT-X), and have released a further four albums: "Negative Prime" (1999), "Advanced Revelation" (2002), "Black Ice Impact" (2004), "Inertia" (2007), plus two remix albums "Demagnetized/Remagnetized" (1999) and "Positive Angel" (2000). In 2006, the American label Cleopatra celebrated 10 years of INERTIA's career by releasing a double disc 'Best Of' compilation, "Decade of Machines", and INERTIA returned to the US to tour again, this time with legendary German electro outfit ARMAGEDDON DILDOS.

The current release, another WORLD EXCLUSIVE from Death Watch Asia, contains ten remixes of songs from the most recent album "Inertia", plus the music video for "The Preacher". Remix artists include legendary names like DIE KRUPPS, YOUTH (KILLING JOKE) and ARMAGEDDON DILDOS as well as Japanese acts DIABOLIC ART (DJ Taiki), SINS OF THE FLESH and 2 BULLET. The first edition of this album, strictly limited to 100 copies, will also contain the album "Inertia" as a bonus disc, and come packaged in a luxurious digipak completely with the original twelve-page Cryonica booklet for "Inertia", plus the DWA eight-page booklet for "Interpret". Jabberwock Sweet Limbo [Japanese Limited Edition] £19.75
Review
JABBERWOCK are a unique and powerful rising force in the European alternative music scene. Many acts claim that their music has a variety of influences, but few are able to mix those influences into something fresh and individual as effectively as this female-fronted French electro-punk three piece.

With their stunning second album "Sweet Limbo", JABBERWOCK have created a work of incredible depth and diversity. Yet it is also one where no track sounds out of place, and where every song sounds like JABBERWOCK – even the cold and sinister cover of CHIC's "Le Freak". Danceable electro-clash reminiscent of PZYCHOBITCH, high-tempo digital hardcore elements with a nod to ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, down-tempo melancholic guitar and bass – "Sweet Limbo" is an amazing mix of alternative music trends from gothic to industrial, from indie rock to electro. And all with perfectly polished production.

With the satirical lyrics of songs like "Obsolete" and the frantic "Faster", and their smart suits, JABBERWOCK mock the meaningless modern lives of the average office worker. The unique music of "Sweet Limbo" is complemented perfectly by a beautiful sixteen-panel booklet full of beautiful and surreal cartoon illustrations of the strange world of JABERWOCK, where 'Every Day=Confusion'.

As a special bonus, Death Watch Asia's Japanese Limited Edition comes with the band’s debut album "Jabberwock" as a bonus CD. Packed with a further ten tracks plus five remixes, "Jabberwock" is an excellent album in its own right, and is presented complete with the original 8-panel booklet. The entire package comes in a specially-designed six-panel digipak combining elements of the artwork of both albums. Strictly limited to 100 copies, this 2CD Japanese Limited Edition is of incredible value and destined to become an instant collector's item.

Panic Lift Witness to Our Collapse [Japanese Limited Edition] £16.50
Review
At Death Watch Asia, they are always on the look out for the best new acts from around the world, of which PANIC LIFT is most definitely one. With its perfect production and memorable melodic hooks, "Witness to our Collapse" is one of those rare albums where almost every track could be a single. All the more amazing when remembering that this is PANIC LIFT's debut!

This is a harsh-EBM/dark electro album, certainly – and full of incredibly powerful tracks that would instantly fill any club dancefloor – but with so much variety that it keeps the listener's attention fully engaged from start to finish. Pounding beats and sequencers, aggressive distorted vocals – the trademarks of the harsh EBM genre are all here. But so too are trip-hop beats, piano and guitars, more reminiscent of NINE INCH NAILS.

Formed in New York in 2006, PANIC LIFT self-released an EP "Dancing Through the Ashes" which quickly sold out as the act moved swiftly to the forefront of the harsh EBM/dark electro scene in America, playing with artists such as COMBICHRIST, AYRIA and MODULATE. A stateside record deal with HIVE followed, leading to the American release in August 2008 of PANIC LIFT's debut full-length album "Witness To Our Collapse". Later in 2008, PANIC LIFT were signed by German label Black Rain/NoiTekk for the European release of the album.

DWA's Japanese Limited Edition comes in a six-panel digipak with eight-panel folding insert, complete with previously unpublished photos from the sessions for the US/European artwork. Also included are the full lyrics for the entire album - also previously unavailable on any other version! A true collector's item of a debut album that truly re-defines the dark electro/harsh EBM genre!

Hot Chip One Life Stand £13.75
Review
HOT CHIP are back with their stunning fourth studio album. "One Life Stand" is a full-blooded leap into the unknown, an album that is awash with HOT CHIP's trademark creative bravery and a searing emotional intensity from the first track to the last. Indeed, "One Life Stand" is by far and away HOT CHIP's most complete body of work to date, an album that is more cohesive and more soulful than 2007's ambidextrous "Made in the Dark" and more ambitious than 2005's Mercury-nominated and Grammy Award-nominated "The Warning". "One Life Stand" is an album that establishes HOT CHIP as one of the most relevant and creative bands of our era.

With Joe Goddard, Alexis Taylor, Felix Martin, Al Doyle and Owen Clarke at the helm it is no surprise that they borrow, create and take inspiration from a plethora of influences. "One Life Stand" sees a proliferation of influences as diverse as the burgeoning UK funky scene to soul music, modern R&B, northern soul, gospel, golden age electronica, detroit house, southern soul, the sounds of ARTHUR RUSSELL, PRINCE and THEO PARISH, and they all sit effortlessly alongside the band's signature pop aesthetics, wild electronics, off-kilter beats and intoxicating musical experimentation in a way that only HOT CHIP can execute.

The songs for "One Life Stand" were largely written around the piano, the Wurlitzer, or the Prophet keyboard, and demoed at Alexis' and Joe's respective home studios. They were then taken to Lanark Studio which Al and Felix own and run, to be fully produced and fleshed out with the three remaining band members. In addition, recording contributions from legendary innovators of their respective fields Charles Hayward (THIS HEAT), and Fimber Bravo (STEEL'N'SKIN), as well as newer musicians Leo Taylor (THE INVISIBLE), and string arrangers and experimental composers Emma Smith and Vince Sipprell (GEESE), were added to elevate the record further.

The finished record is HOT CHIP's most up-front, coherent and melodically bold release to date; an uncluttered, warm and soulful, uplifting and heart-on-sleeve collection. Featuring the archetypal Hot Chip song, title track and first single, "One Life Stand", built on a metronomic but pulsing groove, and reaching up to a joyously simple/naive chorus of monogamous embracement, the album is from start to finish one of love - euphoric, nostalgic, brotherly, realistic even. It is mainly a sequence of club stompers - from the anthemic "Hand Me Down Your Love" to the life-affirming absurdist black humour of "I Feel Better" - tempered with the contemplative, tender realism of "Slush", and the romantic melancholy of "Alley Cats". Take it in, if you will; it's all for you.

Massive Attack Heligoland £13.75
Review
MASSIVE ATTACK are a seminal group of musical innovators whose early work detonated the Bristol music scene of the early 90s and unwittingly gave birth to 'trip-hop'. The group formed in 1987 around their influential and legendary Dug Out Club and Jamaican-style soundsystem. The club played a groundbreaking blend of hip hop, new wave reggae, early house and techno which shaped their hugely acclaimed 1991 debut, "Blue Lines".

Their fifth studio album "Heligoland" features guest vocals from Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Guy Garvey and Tunde Adebimpe. Long time cohort Horace Andy makes a return alongside MASSIVE ATTACK founding members Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall. Damon also plays bass on "Flat of the Blade" and keyboards on "Splitting the Atom" while PORTISHEAD's Adrian Utley plays guitar on "Saturday Come Slow". The band also collaborated with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks.

Various Artists The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume One £11.75
Review
Minimal Wave: both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. "The Minimal Wave Tapes" is the first official anthology of minimal wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. They've been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw Records's Peanut Butter Wolf.

The label itself was founded in New York City in 2005 by Veronika Vasicka, who focused solely on obscure minimal wave recordings, remastering and releasing them on limited vinyl and digital. "The Minimal Wave Tapes" fits neatly into Stones Throw's own tradition of compiling or reissuing the independent music of the past which influences the independent music we make today. This compilation is essential for fans of the likes of KRAFTWERK, CABARET VOLTAIRE, THROBBING GRISTLE, DEVO, GLASS CANDY and NITE JEWEL.

The Twilight Garden A World We Pretend £13.50
Review
THE TWILIGHT GARDEN mixes atmospheric synths and catchy melodies and fuses them with hypnotic drum beats, lush guitar work, and elegantly powerful vocals from sole band-member Todd Loomis. Todd passionately blends old school European synthpop, cold wave and post-punk into a modern, atmospheric, accessible darkwave sound. Imagine the "Disintegration"-era of THE CURE with more emphasis on the electronics. Todd's previous life was as a co-conspirator in VELVET ACID CHRIST, co-writing and performing on 2006's "Lust for Blood", which ranked at the top of Germany's DAC for 4 weeks; the album's single "Wound", ranked on the DAC's singles chart for 7 weeks and held the #1 position for 4 weeks.

"I started The Twilight Garden shortly after I finished working with Bryan Erickson of VAC," Todd explains. "Like myself, Bryan also can be quite depressive, misanthropic, wary and alienated. We related easily, and from our mutual interest in music sprang the album 'Lust for Blood'. After the completion of that album, I had so much else I wanted to do and say - many ideas and things I needed to put into tangible form - so I began the creation of what would become 'A World We Pretend'. During the recording, there were moments of sadness, happiness, loneliness, and bliss - as with everything I experience or create. All moments are fleeting, and all things end. When put into a recording though, something transient can be fixed in time and given extended life. It reflects an instant which can never again exist, and even more spectacularly, music allows that energy to live in someone else for a time. The title track is largely about the beauty of the moment and the anguish that comes along with fate: a mix of ecstasy and emptiness."

The album explores the darker side of truth as it mirrors life: the weight of inevitability, sadness, frustration, indifference, anger, loneliness, claustrophobia, etc. Todd ponders the desperation of time, sands falling through the hourglass, the end creeping forward, and our own powerlessness in the face of finality. There is a deep sense of sorrow in the music, a haunted awareness that time is running out. "I can never seem to rid myself of this feeling for more than a flitting moment," Todd says. "It's just a part of my life. Nothing can last forever, and all things will pass. I do my best to find beauty in the struggle of human existence - to find little pieces of joy or wonder. I believe some of that has been captured on this album."

The sweeping sound is warm and emotional yet at times filled with a deep chill. Instrumentation is predominately synth-based with guitars providing a swirling wall of texture: melodic at times, yet mainly harmonic and organic. Spellbinding drums are slightly repetitive and almost dance-like. Vocals range from a soft whisper to full verbal onslaught. Overall, "A World We Pretend" is a passionate outpouring of deep and enduring melancholy. Poetic and flowing, the album provides beautiful atmospheres of stark images and emotion.

The Girl and the Robot Whole/Flowers £6.75
Review
Do androids dream of electric sheep? Does the tin man hide a heart somewhere inside his metallic cavity? And how human can a machine actually be?

Questions like these make up the fascinating universe of THE GIRL & THE ROBOT, a German-Swedish Electro collaboration that has set out to merge the warmth of human emotions with the calculating reservation of synthetic intelligence, to create a modern electronic fairytale.

As a first result of this prolific companionship between machine man Deadbeat and the personified temptation Plastique, the duo offer the double feature single "Whole/Flowers" on which they wander effortlessly along the thin red line between unleashed passion and classy confidentiality.

Plastique's voice is as seductive and intoxicating as the aura of the tantalizing singer herself, sweeping over the songs like a lascivious kiss that would even turn an emotionless robot into a hot-blooded lover. This eye-opening and sense-reeling feeling can be experienced over and over again on this EP, whose warming vocals break the synthetically caused coolness like icicles melting in the warming sun of spring, thereby creating hypnotizing and vibrant electro dew drops.

One thing is certain: even an Android will only dream of Plastique’s beauty henceforth after having laid eyes on her alluring form and having listened to her conjuring voice for one single moment.

THE GIRL & THE ROBOT unite COVENANT's elegance with CLIENT's sexy style, and with melancholic tracks like "Howling Winter" they also pledge allegiance to the solitary soundscapes of LADYTRON and RÖYKSOPP. As a result, the atmosphere of a nocturnal metropolis merges with a soft longing to create a gripping listening experience that even transcends the boundaries of the named artists: On "Whole/Flowers", the Scandinavian robot and his long-legged beauty convey the message that the seemingly paradoxical similarity between girl and robot only exists in our heads. Humans or machines... aren’t we all creatures searching for comfort, freedom and love?

With remixes by DIE PERLEN and JAVELYNN FATE (the new project of former ASHBURY HEIGHTS stunner Yasmine Uhlin) on board, THE GIRL & THE ROBOT head for the future, entering a new era of the relationship between man and machine.

Ballo Delle Castagne 108 £14.75
Review
108 is the diabolic passion we need to fight everyday to turn ourselves into Buddah. 108 is also a magical and esoteric number present in many mystic religions and cultures. And "108" is also the title of the new limited 10" vinyl release by the Italian neo-folk act BALLO DELLE CASTAGNE, featuring two covers of songs about the diabolic passion of two great Italian artists from the 70s: "Biglietto per l’Inferno" and Franco Battiato.

"108" by BALLO DELLE CASTAGNE is only one chapter devoted to human evil in all its manifestations.

Attrition Ephemera [Re-Issue] £14.50
Review
"Ephemera", the second in ATTRITION's occasional series of dark ambient instrumental soundtracks, was released to critical acclaim on the now defunct Hyperium label in Germany in 1995 - a follow up to ATTRITION's "This Death House" album of dark analogue soundscapes of 1982. This album is much more than just an exploration of the emerging digital technologies of the times, with founder member Martin Bowes using these tools to take a more abstract look at the themes of love, sex, religion, beauty, hope and despair that pervade any ATTRITION album. Here they capture emotion and allow the listener space to reflect, to populate these pieces with their own dreams or, sometimes, nightmares.

Review
Originally released in 1993 on Hyperium Records in Germany, and a few years later on Martin Atkins' Invisible Records in the States, "The Hidden Agenda" was a breakthrough album for ATTRITION and contains some of their best known work. With cover artwork from English artist Mark Lomax, the album has been totally re-mastered by main man Martin Bowes and this edition includes three extra tracks from the "Lip Sync" CD single.

Attrition Dante's Kitchen [Re-Issue] £14.50
Review
"Dante's Kitchen", originally released in 1994, is an eclectic album which includes many favourites from the current ATTRITION live show. Favourites such as the song "Two Gods" (featured on the hugely successful Projekt records "New Face of Goth" CD sampler, as well as at least two movie scores), the haunting and lyrical "Head of Gabriel" and the title track itself, "Dante's Kitchen" - the culmination of ATTRITION's work for many years with dark ambient electronics, classical and rhythmic elements. Influences range from drum'n'bass to "gothic" jazz, with classical excursions as well, in the use of violin on many of the tracks, this time from French musician Rafael who joins main man Martin Bowes and vocalist Julia Waller. There is also a cameo vocal appearance from Liz Green of UK techno goth act SWARF.

This re-released edition includes new artwork and four bonus tracks in the form of remixes from a cross-section of dark ambient, techno and IDM producers.

Diorama Child of Entertainment £6.50
Review
DIORAMA are announcing the 'year of the cube' with a brand new 7-track EP!

As a preview to their highly anticipated new longplayer "Cubed", "Child of Entertainment" will be appearing in stores in February 2010. As well as the album version, the title track is presented in four different interpretations, from a forceful club version to a fragile piano composition. The release is complemented with both a remake of DIORAMA's classic from 2001 "HLA" and a brilliant live version of their club hit "Advance".

In their uniquely profound style, DIORAMA merge melancholic intensity and melodic easiness into an earworm par excellence. Resignation has never been more entertaining!

Nadja / Kodiak Split £12.75
Review
This split release from the canadian shoegazers NADJA and the still new and hot german band KODIAK comes up with two sidelong, complex tracks. Complex in the sense of combining atmospheric instrumental fields with very dark symphonies. Intense!

NADJA: in doom and drone, genres where much of the stuff can sound remarkably similar, here is a band that stands apart as a beacon. NADJA have the deep drones and all the darkness of doom, but they also have intricate melodies that permeate their long dirges... What's commendable about NADJA is the alchemical experimentation with the genres resulting in a unique concoction of doom metal, drone, shoegazer layering, and avant-rock explorations.

KODIAK: not a band that you just play for enjoyment; they need time and attention, but when they locks you in their slowly developing, pachyderm-paced punishing groove, KODIAK have a lot to offer, proving that monotony and monolithic heaviness are enough to make great songs, if you know how. KODIAK definitely know it.

Fear Factory Mechanize £13.79
Review
Mechanize is a full-fisted blast of passion and innovation that sounds like the missing link between 1995's groundbreaking "Demanufacture" and 1998's more texturally nuanced "Obsolete". Songs like "Industrial Discipline" and "Powershifter" are crushing and colossal, melding fast and precise rhythms with vocals that pinwheel from raw and scathing to hauntingly melodic while "Fear Campaign", which features harrowing spoken word passages, quickly segues into a showcase of punishing beats, rapid-fire riffs and ghostly keyboards. For the first time in years, the band's industrial roots glimmer through their street-lethal metal, thanks in part to Fulber, who worked on Fear Factory's popular industrial remix albums "Fear Is the Mindkiller" and "Remanufacture". While "Mechanize" is instantly reminiscent of Fear Factory's most potent moments of discovery, it's hardly a stroll down the old assembly line. Be it the orchestral keyboard swells of "Christploitation", the keyboard-infused dirge of "Final Exit", the taped screams and radio transmissions of "Controlled Demolition" or the last-gasp-under-shattered-glass samples of "Metallic Division,” each of these tracks amply demonstrates how experience of FEAR FACTORY has evolved like a computer virus, constantly reconfiguring itself to maximize its destructive impact.

SOUNDCLIPS ADDED THIS WEEK
Nitzer Ebb Industrial Complex [UK Edition] £14.50
Review
When Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris formed a band in 1982 and started to record their first demos, they didn't yet know that they were writing music history. Their sound was raw and unpolished, an electronic adaptation of the dying punk movement. With minimal funding, drums, a sequencer and McCarthy's penetrating voice, they quickly came to stand as a synonym for a significant new musical genre: Electronic Body Music (or EBM for short). Through seminal albums such as "That Total Age", "Belief" and "Ebbhead", they continued to beat their own unique path, until they parted company after ten years.

However, this was not the end and recent reunion shows have proven that there is life still in the old ghost. As brilliant and relevant today as ever, they are now back with a brand new studio album, "Industrial Complex". Opening with a rousing bassline, reminiscent of the wonderful "Murderous", the opening track "Promises" sets the tone. McCarthy's voice varies from offensive to fragile, with an arrangement rich in detail, edginess and energy. This album is like a bridge back in time to the 80s. Without doubt, this is the work of NITZER EBB, with the same level of complexity that characterises all their work, traversing the years to create a new modern sound for the present.

This special UK edition features unique artwork. NITZER EBB will also be joining DEPECHE MODE as the opening act for the final leg of their "Tour of the Universe", starting in Berlin on January 9 2010, through to Dusseldorf on February 27.

Rome L'Assassin £6.90
Review
The Assassin – Murder? Crime of passion? As always, ROME's titles ought to be taken with a pinch of salt. ROME's new 'Chanson Noir' is speaking of man's enslavement in a world of constant transformation.

The traditions of (French) chanson and (American) folk are becoming more and more influential in their current work. Chansonniers like LÉO FERRÉ, JACQUES BREL and singer/songwriter heroes like CAVE, CASH and COHEN are obvious influences. The previous album "Flowers from Exile" already gave a first impression of what they themselves call 'Chanson Noir' – the darker side of singer/songwriter tradition: post-industrial folk with bits and pieces of electronic pop, complex arrangements of breathtaking melodies, mesmerizing ballads of lyrical beauty, underlining ROME's ethos of never faltering or remaining uninvolved.

This EP features four songs, among which the exclusive and intimate track "One Flesh". The creative input of new member Nikos Mavridis (on violin and other stringed instruments) has become more and more apparent, most obviously in the reinvented, 'stringed' versions of two classic ROME tracks "Der Erscheinungen Flucht" and "Der Brandtaucher" from the highly successful album "Masse Mensch Material".

ROME reinvent themselves with each release, yet without ever losing track of their roots. Still, the sheer anger and ultimate despair of the early, warlike days has evaporated somewhat to make room for more complex and classical arrangements and ever more thought-provoking lyrics. ROME: unmasked, honest and authentic!

Dark Sanctuary Dark Sanctuary £12.75
Review
"Dark Sanctuary" is the seventh full length album by leading French goth/ethereal act DARK SANCTUARY. This self-titled album follows on from the two-part conceptual album "Exaudi Vocem Meam" released a few years ago. The band took a break after that and finally managed to put together their most sophisticated album to date, taking care of every single detail, including self production and recording/mixing. Instead the external input this time came in the form of an exceptional set of illustrations and artwork made exclusively for this album by world-renowned Spanish gothic artist Victoria Frances. The album also follows a recent stunning concert that the band performed in London's St. Pancras cathedral: an incredible event performed in a one-of-a-kind scenario that was filmed for a future DVD release.

Classix Nouveaux The Liberty Singles Collection £10.50
Review
CLASSIX NOUVEAUX formed from the ashes of X RAY SPEX when the band auditioned for a new front person in the Melody Maker after the sudden departure of their wild wailer POLY STYRENE. The enigmatic SAL SOLO was chosen by guitarist Jak Airport and drummer BP Hurding and with the addition of bassist Mik Sweeney from Sal's previous band THE NEWS, a soon-to-be cult band was born. Their heavily made up, theatrical image led them to be quickly associated with the New Romantic movement as they filled the alternative dance floor with their synth-driven beats, though their sound was more guitar-oriented than that of their peers JAPAN and ULTRAVOX. "The Liberty Singles Collection", featuring both A and B sides (some of which have never been on CD before), is a must have for any fan of CLASSIX NOUVEAUX, and a perfect starting point for anyone who has missed this criminally ignored band.

Unter Null Moving On £13.03
Review
It is not every day that an artist manages to squarely establish herself at the top of the underground electronic scene with only a debut album under her belt. Well, UNTER NULL proved the contrary with the highly successful album "The Failure Epiphany" that has become a classic reference on the dark scene. Sole creation of American artist Erica Dunham, the UNTER NULL project was initiated in 1998. After years of classical piano training, as well as cello and guitar, the foray into electronic music began. UNTER NULL's sound could be described as equal parts melody and noise, venom balanced with sentiment, and a blend of sounds influenced by a wide variety of genres spanning industrial, classical, black metal and IDM.

Today, Dunham breaks her extended and worrying silence with the new aptly titled album "Moving On", which plunges us into a world of torment, violence, deviance and darkness. Synthetic layers and piano lines get assaulted by powerful elektro sequences and EBM rhythms dominated by the poignant and terrifying voice of this unique and uncompromised artist... An intensely introspective and quite a personal album, we can perceive it as a form of catharsis, getting rid of the negative, venomous things in life - be they people or situations. Spiteful moments of complete rage intermingled with broken heart despair through which we simply end up loosing faith in faith…

Produced and engineered by Claus Larsen (LEAETHER STRIP), "Moving On" reveals how much this artist has matured and broadened her artistic approach, including on stage where Erica Dunham is now supported by a full live band, allowing her the live dynamic to fully render the aggression of an album that looks to span genre boundaries, and overcome scene isolation by incorporating the engaging elements of punk rock energy, metal ferocity, and the intensity and club playability of industrial and EBM.

Here comes the most anxiously anticipated third volume of LEAETHER STRIP's "Retention" box series through which Claus Larsen is re-releasing his complete back-catalogue. Each re-release has both the fully remastered version of the original album (with special bonus material) on disc one and on the second disc, totally rewritten and re-interpreted versioms of some selected songs from the original album re-recorded with current technologies.

Once again, the "Retention No. 3" box includes two complementary albums: the first of which is the "Solitary Confinement" CD remastered by Claus Larsen himself, giving a stronger and wider sound to this chef d'oeuvre while staying very faithful to the original work. The original tracklist has also been extended to 16 tracks with the addition of tracks from the "Material" EP.

Next comes the "Voluntary Confinement" CD which gathers some 10 selected tracks taken from disc one, totally re-written and re-recorded by LEAETHER STRIP in the 2009 upgraded Strip Farm studio, benefiting from today's technologies and Claus Larsen's acquired expertise through the decades. Add to this two brand new songs with "Voluntary Confinement" and "The AEnd", as well as a very cool melodic "Taeknopop" version of the interstellar hit "Strap Me Down".

"Solitary Confinement" is without any doubt the album that has forever seated the Danish artist on the throne of classic dark EBM. An album frothing with countless club hits in the likes of "Strap Me Down", "Adrenalin Rush" and "Evil Speaks"... an album that established LEAETHER STRIP as THE reference point for aggressive electronics with distorted vocals performed with a strong sense for melody and carrying choruses. The fully extended power blast is a guarantee for LEAETHER STRIP's faithful and ever growing fanbase. The "Retention" series proves once and for all that Electronic Body Music is NOT dead and allows the younger fan generation to discover the early work of the living legend LEAETHER STRIP. Once again a series proving that good old giants still have what it takes to command today's dancefloors. These discs are NOT available separately and are only sold in this deluxe carton box.
