It is being much touted a return to form for the trio from Essex, and the chosen name alone makes the release feel like the follow up to "Music For The Masses". But it doesn't stop there... DEPECHE MODE apparently returned to using a lot of vintage gear in the making of this album, from analogue synthesizers to drum machines, in order to conjure up the retro-futuristic arrangements featured here. Lyrically the release contains many of the group's enduring obsessions plus more overt black humor than any of their previous collections. Not to be missed. This collector's box set comes packaged in a two-piece custom-made box with foil blocking, and contains 2 x 84 page hardback books. Review Against tremendous odds ASP have finally brought about an album with and by their fans. In 2004 the band had organized a unique contest : "Asp Want You" was an invitation to all listeners to get up and take part - whether as singer, photographer, sound engineer or editor, the band set out to encourage the artistic potential of their listeners. The contest was divided into three phases : Phase I - 'Raise Your Voice' offered a playback version of Asp's cult song "Hässlich" to sing to. Phase II - 'Face The World' asked Asp fans to express their inner selves by creating an artistic impression of what ( to them ) would be "Hässlich". Finally, in Phase III - 'Bring Down Your Idols', Asp offered a remix kit of "Hässlich" to work with as people liked, they could remix it, cover it or reinterpret it in their own personal way. Now issued at long last, the album features the winners of all three phases. Beside truly impressive work from Phase I, the fascinating collection of remixes and cover versions from Phase II easily puts alternative versions by better known aspirants in the background. Winners from Phase II are immortalized on the cover and in the booklet, which was lovingly assembled by Pit Hammann. Review Hard electronics polygamist Matt Fanale, aka CAUSTIC, has been churning out his blend of industrial combined with everything from techno, punk, ebm, breakcore, and beyond for going on 7 years now, releasing most of it on California's Crunch Pod label. Review 'The Slip' is the eighth proper studio release for NIN. The music here resembles types of songs from 'With Teeth', 'Year Zero' and 'Ghosts'. Reznor is generally known for taking big steps forward. Although he is alienating some older fans and gaining new ones, he is always ensuring NIN's longevity. 'The Slip' is a very good record more on the lines of 'With Teeth'. A step back and not forward. But even Reznor needs a break from being epic every once in a while! Review "Dark Rivers" is the sonic exploration and reflection of a particular stretch of landscape in the north of England. This is the home of RAPOON's Robin Storey and it is an essential part of who he is. "'Dark Rivers' is about a particular area in the North of England which stretches from the Solway Firth into the wastelands of the Northumbrian borders. This area is steeped in history and mystery. In particular, I have focused on the development of Britain's Cold War intercontinental ballistic missile weaponry in the late forties and fifties and which later became the center for Britain's space efforts. The idea that these top secret research bases were sited here is one of interest in itself. The area is historically renowned for its outlaws and geographical and political marginalism. Geographically, this is where the Roman Empire stopped and long before that this is an area that has the highest count of pre-historic rock glyphs anywhere in the world. Many of the place names reflect the ancient cultural beliefs and superstitions - Black Fell, Black Beck, etc. Even today the place is wild and remote and old superstitions live on. The conflict of the ancient superstitions and the Cold War paranoia is essentially what this is about. The older superstitions swallowing whole the newer age which came and went on the same dark, brooding hills. I was lucky enough to be born and grow up here and the darkness of the place is embedded deeply inside me." More than with any other project of Pohl’s, music and lyrics revolve around one central concept... that of fetishism. What makes Seelenkrank so special is that the focus is put not only on the archetypical themes of sadomasochistic nature, but also concentrates on Pohl´s obsession with blood and vampirism. Driven to perfection on this second output, Seelenkrank´s music stands as a superb example as to what Fetish-Electro should sound like.. spiced up with Chris Pohl’s very own stylistic specialties : cold, hard beats meet dark and often distorted vocals that dress the dominating blood fantasies into a fitting gown. But all the coldness and sterility is often torn apart by very slow and melancholy black ballads that go to show that, although the predominant image of the scene might lead the uninitiated to believe otherwise, fetish is all about emotions. The music of Seelenkrank draws a perfect logical bridge between the hard, dark Electro of early Terminal Choice to the electronic goth elegies of Blutengel today... and thereby sounds all but antiquated. Club smashers, like ''Black Goddess'', still manage to fill the dance floor at every goth joint they are played at today... and can now be enjoyed in a fat, bass-thumping remastered sound. It is an immersive, powerful and sometimes harrowing cinematic journey through sound and emotion - two years in the making, strewn with tears, joy and casualties. Jay Wasco has created an overture, blending musical elements and recasting and juxtaposing themes until it becomes like a broadway opus with an explosive prog coda. Fennesz has distressed and granulated the track "Pareidolia" into a textural dream. Mike Patton unshackles "How To Vibrate" like the monster from The Host mud wrestling with Hans Zimmer on the set of a Dario Argento film. J.G. Thirlwell 's extensive reworking of his own "Mon Agonie Douce", a dizzying waltz that takes us from the cobblestone streets of Montmartre to the back alleys of Istanbul in a roller coaster that erupts into a exotic caco-phonic splendor. Tom Recchion has taken elements from each song on the album and refashioned them into something beyond a mash up, it is more a psycho-acoustic meditative extrusion. Tweaker ramps up the blister on the already blustering "Aladdin Reverse". Japanese artist Tujiko Nuriko weaves her magic into a breathing, sinuous remix of the sultry "Dont Want Me Anymore". Jason Forrest' s take on "Not Adam" careens between searing breakbeats and fluttering harpsichordal flourishes. TRZTN 's turn on the track "Thrush", a duet between Thirlwell and Elysian Fields' Jennifer Charles , is a claustrophobic symphonic pop stomp.
